Me and Charmaine were washing our cars the other day. Yup. We finally came down to bringing the car to the garage and washing it after buying the soap over a month ago. While we were washing, I open up the front of the car (trunk? boot?) and wanted to put water into the radiator.
Charmaine immediately stopped me and said you can't put tap water into the radiator. She has special yellow "coolant" for it. I had no idea what she was talking about. As far as I could remember, I always see my dad putting tap water into the radiator. Why can't you put water into the radiator?
After reading the directions and explanations of the coolant bottle, I found out that the purpose of the coolant was to cool down (duh!) the engine and stuff. Em.. sorry if I sound totally unknowledgeble. Charmaine wasn't much help too. All she could tell me was that her father told her to put coolant and nothing else.
Is there a difference between the cars in tropical countries and the cars over here?
Both us girls just look at each other helplessly while deciding how much coolant should we put. Coz technically it was Charmaine's first time too..
Why can't schools teach these stuff to us? What's the use if schools doesn't teach us how to take care of our own cars? What is the difference between air tools and power tools? Why must man be the one that knows all these things? I wanna learn too but where?
Argh.. I hate to admit it but I need a guy. That's all I can say.
Sigh..
The Daishonin states, "Cherry, plum, peach and damson blossoms all have their own qualities, and they manifest the three properties of the life of the Buddha without changing their character" (Gosho Zenshu, p. 784).

I don't like the Christmas spirit!
"Tease the season to be jolly, sha-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la..."
AH.. I hate Christmas songs! =( They always remind me of how lonely I feel during Christmas coz I'm away from everyone I love..
Why must they start playing Christmas songs so fast? They started playing it since the beginning of November! What the?!!!
I hate going to malls during the Christmas season and seeing everyone shopping crazily for their friends and family. I'm all alone during Christmas. *sob*
Though I still end up going to malls every time coz that's the only place one can go to pass time. And also of course I love shopping.
I guess I just have to be strong and not succumb to my negativity. Shopping is the way to go! Wahahaha.. Promotional bags, tops, coats, boots... Wahaha..
Here I come..

There's never enough memory..
Its so funny when you think about how we used to survive with a 30GB computer 10 years ago. Or maybe even smaller than that. Now, even 80GB is not enough for me. My laptop memory is now left with over 5GB. I don't know where all the memory went. I know I have a lot of songs and all.. but.. Argh.. its never enough.
I know of friends that have hard drives of over 300GB and its still not enough for them. What does these people have? Crazy!!! Movies, pictures, songs, porn..
Its never enough.
File sizes have shrink too. Not to mention hard drives' sizes. 300GB is now in a small cute hard drive. I wonder how small can it further go?

Stop Sign
I went to Cody's friend's place the other day in Malacca and saw a super weird out-of-the-place item outside their house. Guess what it was? Yup. My title gave it away. It was a stop sign. One that you see on the streets.
When I saw it, the first thing that came into my mind was "how cool is that? I want something like that too! It will be such a good decorative piece for my home next time!"
I turned around and ask where did this stop sign come from? Cody then told me he "stole" it from the street. There was a automobile accident near his place and this car knocked down the stop sign into the ditch. While everyone was busy getting all worked up over the accident, Cody went into the ditch and took the sign.
Haha.. Imagine that!!!
Now don't you think it'll be cool to have a exit sign on your living room wall too? It'll be so retro. And I like retro! =)

Compliments
One thing I realized about being in U.S. is the amount of compliments and praises that people are willing to give. Growing up from a Chinese family have certainly taught me that praises are something that should not be given lightly. Especially to children. It'll not only make the kid's head "big" but also stop the kid from further improving.
That's certainly not the case here.
I have been getting so many compliments lately. Everything from my schoolwork, to my swimming, to my dressing. Its so weird. And you know what the funny part is? I'm not even great in any of these stuff. Professors, and coaches here are trained to highlight the best part of you and give compliments about it. It certainly makes u feel good. But I wonder, how far can it go?
Does compliments make you an arrogant person or it pushes you to work harder?
My Japanese teacher told me that my eyeglasses look good the other day. Randomly. After being in his class for 3 months!
I have to admit I love hearing my professors say my papers are excellent. Not so sure about stopping my head from growing bigger though..

Blogging - My Love
Wow.. I have been blogging for 2 year already. I started in 2006 as a means to have fun and join the blogging community and now, its been 2 years and its still counting. Lots of stuff have happen between these two years.
I finished my STPM, applied for UKM, studied there for a while, applied for a university in US, was accepted, flew to California, spend my first year there, went back to Malaysia for summer holidays, stayed in Ho Chi Minh for a while, and am now back in California again.
That is basically the summary of my life these past 2 years. New experiences, new stories to tell, new knowledge.. maybe even a new person. Not sure about that yet. But one thing I'm really glad is that my blog is still running. Even though I may not blog as often as I had when I first started, but at least, my thoughts are documented once in a while.
I remember wanting to move my blog to its own domain. A .com site instead of the blogspot behind it. I actually paid money to buy the domain but things got complicated after a while. I wasn't exactly the IT expert here. So I gave up. A couple of web hosting reviews were good in recommending which sites serve the best hosting services but it was just to much for me. So here I am.. back in good old faithful blogspot.
Although I'm too lazy to start my own domain, I certainly recommend people to have one. Especially if you're thinking of getting serious with blogging. It gives you so much more freedom in doing what you want, and of course, if you're looking to earn more money. Though blogspot gives much more freedom than a lot of other web hosting sites.
2 years and counting. I wonder if my imaginary readers are still here?

San Francisco Here I come..
Up I go again, to the land of the Golden Gate Bridge. The only difference this time is that I'm going there for a swim meet, and not for fun.
I'm going to miss so many stuff this weekend though. My roommate is turning 21 this Sunday. There's a bunch of school events including the annual Student Festival. We can't have everything.
Can you imagine Princess Shin going somewhere to attend a swim meet?
Wahhahaa.. never in a thousand years would I have imagine that I can call myself an athlete.
Though I'm super afraid of swimming the 50 back and doing relays. Coach is putting me into the relays for the first time because there's only 12 girls and we need 4 girls for a team.
As usual I'm gonna be the last again.
Sigh.. But its the experience that matter rights? =)

Japanese Internment Camps
Did you know that the Japanese were once put into internment camps in the U.S because they were thought to betray the U.S during the Second World War?
These Japanese Americans who were essentially American citizens were forced to evacuate from their homes, give up everything that they own and move to internment camps mainly in the West Coast. The first of these internment camps, which is now termed "concentration camps" is in Manzanar, somewhere in California.
The Executive Order 9066 was issued in February 19th, 1942 by then President Franklin Roosevelt to put these Japanese descendants into camps because of "military necessity." Even though there was no evidence of any disloyalty among these Japanese people and 2/3 of these people were actual American citizens, they were still forcibly put into the camps. They were only all released in 1945. The constitution that claims that all citizens have "equal protection of the law" was not taken into account.
Child at the Los Angeles Railroad Station: Clem Albers-p. 36 Newly Built Mess Halls at Manzanar: Clem Albers-p. 45
Although they were not tortured in any ways like the concentration camps in Germany. These Japanese people lost everything they had. They were forced to give up their properties, houses, and business to live in these military barracks just because the U.S government doubted their loyalty. They didn't even have any prove of any disloyalty from these Japanese people. Most of internees were little children.
Some say that the Americans have all the right to discriminate against the Japanese for what they had done in Pearl Habor. Even today, the old generations of Malaysians still hate the Japanese for what they had done during the Second World War.
However, the U.S government didn't do anything towards the German immigrants even though the U.S were at war with German at that time.
So was the discrimination purely based upon race or the nationality?

Economic downturn
There is a constant speculation regarding the current state of the U.S economy now. I'm not really affected by it because I'm studying and all but I'm wondering how serious it is out there in the real world. Some speculate that this current economic crisis may be the next Great Depression. I am learning about the Great Depression in my American Experience class and its not a pretty sight. Over 11 million people were unemployed at the height of the Great Depression. About 25% of the total population. And it was stretched from 1929 to right before the Second World War, around 1940.
Scary right? I really hope it will not happen again. Not only will it affect the U.S, the whole world will be affected too. Even now, the sales in U.S have dropped. People are spending less and less because of the economic crisis now. Everyone is getting all so uptight and stressed about their financial situation. I hope my family back in Vietnam aren't too affected by it.
I have been spending very little lately too. As I mentioned before, I used to visit the malls every week or so. But now, I do it once every month and even then, I rarely buy anything. I think I just came to realize that I cannot wear that many clothes anyway so why waste so much money? However, there are some essential stuff that I still want to buy though. Like a camera.. or maybe an iPod. Haha.. but its still in the thinking process.
Its good that companies like Zenni Optical offers cheap eyeglasses. You can get a pair for around $8! Can you believe that? That's because they don't go through middle people and they spent less on advertisements. With companies like this, everyone would be able to get cheap eyeglasses without having to worry about the prices.
Sigh.. I hope things improve for the better soon.

Talented Connie Talbot
Have you heard about this young girl? If you havent, you must be hiding under a coconut tree or something. Though to tell you the truth, I just came across her today while browsing through videos in youtube.
She's only 7 years old now and is already producing her own album.
She got her famed through the reality show "Britain's Got Talent" with none other than the infamous Simon Cowell.
You should see her audition. She has a voice of an angel.. So sweet and innocent.
My only hope is that she doesn't let fame get to her head and end up like one of those teen stars that goes in and out of rehab.
Is too much fame bad for a young kid? Only time can tell but right now.. she's awesome!!!

Cheap Spectacles!
I still love calling glasses "spectacles!" I know its a British thing and all but "spectacles" just sound more elegant and sophisticated! Don't you think so?
I love my current spectacle. Hehe..My maroon colored rimmed glasses. I don't know what is with my obsession with dark rimmed glasses but I feel it is so much better than those frame-less glasses that everyone is going gaga about. Or maybe that's what I think. I think frame-less glasses are so out already.
I even gave up my contact lenses now. Obviously its because of multiple reasons but I wouldn't have readily given it up if I didn't have pretty spectacles.
Eyeglasses nowadays can be soo cheap. Though its hard to find the perfect one to fit your features. I know I like dark-rimmed glasses. But not too thick. It has to be fairly thin but still able to see it. Titanium is the best. Metal is okay but you have the risk of having it rust. That will not be a good sight.
Zenni Optics has really good eyeglasses. The prices there are very reasonable too. The picture shown below cost only around USD 24! That will be a frame that I like. But black or red would be a better color.

Spectacles are no more a chore to wear. Its part of our everyday outfit and an accessory to make us look prettier. Therefore, choose wisely to get the best fit for you.

A New Beginning..
Obama has won.
The first African American to be the U.S president.
Right this very moment the electoral votes are 297 to 145. (As of 8:38pm it was 338 to 155)
You need 270 to be the President.
The people have changed now. Race and discrimination is no more an issue anymore. People have more goodness that we think.. The human race essentially want peace and equality.
Race doesn't matter now. What is important is the common good of the society.. We have so much hope for this new president now.. I really sincerely hope things change.
First and foremost.. the war in Iraq.. But right of now..
Oh my goodness.... I'm in awed..
I'm shocked..
Update: Obama is wonderful giving speech. So inspiring. I still have goosebumps on me. I was in tears..
Yes We Can!!! Yes We Can!!!
61% of Obama's vote is from the white people! From slavery to the President of United States.
The world is seeing a change now..
And you know what's the best part? More and more young people are coming out to vote now!!! Yay youth!

Election Day!!!
Ooooh.. The big day is finally here.. The day that will change history!!! The U.S Election Day is finally here...
Its so exciting to be part of this craziness!!! Campaigns here and there.. people putting signs on the streets promoting either yes or no to different propositions..
Did you know that there is a proposition that bans gay marriages? If you vote "yes" on Prop 8, means you agree that gay marriages should be ban in California.
Then there is Prop 4 that makes it mandatory for doctors to tell a minor's parents if she undergoes an abortion. This is a tricky question though. On one hand you would definitely want the girl's parents to know about a big issue like this right? But on the other hand, what if the parents are abusive? Or threatening? Such tricky questions..
Then there is also Prop 2 that aims to give better treatment to farm animals.
There are 12 propositions altogether. Californians vote on it together with their presidential vote.
Its gonna be exciting tonight. When the results are shown.
I wonder who will win the election? Some say that Obama will surely win hands down. But there is still a tiny "What if?"
There's the conservative John McCaine.

And the young bold democratic first African American Obama.
I know who I'm rooting for to win. Though obviously I can't vote..

*crosses fingers*
Hopefully the man who we are all rooting for to win will win and make changes he claims to do!

Never too Old
Oh my goodness.. I just recently learn that my aunt, my mum's older sister has gone back to college!!!
Wow.. She's like 57 years old now.
I totally agree with "its never too late to gain more knowledge" but.. hahaha..
This is pretty weird.
And you know what's she studying?
IT.. computer stuff. Of all things. Although I guess its a good thing. Coz she doesn't really have much things to do. Since she doesn't have any kids and all. I always ask my mum to go back to school or something.
Its just weird knowing that my aunt is back in college now. Specifically a university. Congrats Aunt!!! All the best!!! =)

Ally McBeal
Remember the show Ally McBeal? Oh.. How I love that show. It was soo funny. Especially in the first few seasons. When she was fighting to get back with her old high school boyfriend Billy who turned up to be married to this pretty lady Georgia? And the essential other lawyer, Lucy?
Didn't we all love how Ally was always so clumsy and messy especially when it came to her love life? All the weird babies walking around in her imagination.
I swear.. she's a little crazy.
I used to love love love her. It actually made me want to become a laywer at some point in my life. These shows are so bad. They paint a pretty picture of the particular profession. Like doctors or crime scene invetigators. When does these interesting things ever happen in real life? I mean seriously... Maybe the best you can be is a Mesothelioma lawyer. But have a life like Ally McBeal? With the interesting stuff happening in courts like what was shown?
I dont think so..
I wonder how come American TV doesn't show any reruns of this show. They still show reruns of Friends, Gilmore Girls, Sex and the City, even Fullhouse! But no Ally McBeal.
Why... I wanna see reruns of Ally McBeal...

American houses
I remember watching TV when I was young and noticing how American houses do not have any fence or gates around the house. You know how Malaysian houses all have big gates and wall surrounding the houses? I remember my dad bringing us to this new residential area, now famously known as Tropicana and I was totally amazed by how the houses there didn't have any fences surrounding them.
Aren't they afraid of people coming in?
Of course I didn't know anything about how tight the security is and all that. But the houses in America are like that too. No such thing as fences here. Stainless steel or pvc fence installation. You can go onto any person's compartment anytime. Though them being happy is another thing. I wonder which is better?

Multitasking!
One thing about having a wired campus is that you can bring your laptop everywhere and be able to online anytime and anywhere you want. One downside is that because you can bring your laptop everywhere, you bring it to class to. What was intended as a tool for you to write down notes effectively is now used as a tool to overcome boredom.
Professors that don't possessed the skill to keep their students entertained will find that their students are checking their emails, facebooking, or playing Yahoo games while "listening" to the professor. Basically, what is needed is that a few looks at the professor, some eye contact and face nodding, a little typing here and there and you're all set to pretend listening in class while skyping your boyfriend across the world.
Wahahaha.. too bad the time difference in Malaysia doesn't allow me to do that.
There's nothing much the professor can do other than forbid students to bring laptop to class. But you can't do that in this modern age and time. Keylogger can be a good preventive measure. But that's only if you're using a desktop.
I guess professors just have to work hard to make sure that they can keep their students' attention and not lose it to facebook.
