Burma Vs Myanmar

I remember when I was in high school, we started to learn about the countries in South East Asia. And one of those countries is Myanmar. However, when I came here, my professor kept using the word Burma and not Myanmar. Why? I wondered. Did he get it wrong or did the name changed since I left high school?

I realize I have been really ignorant of the issues facing the world today. I remember my dad telling me once about this lady called Aung San Suu Kyi who was held in house arrest in "Myanmar" for trying to fight for her people. That was the first time I heard about her name and that's pretty much all I knew about this lady.

Only after I attended a class with Betty Williams, a Nobel Peace Laureate that I realize that this lady had won the elections in 1990. She won 80% of the people's vote and is rightfully the prime minister of the country. That is the highest democratic win in the whole world. But the military regime did not recognize her and instead put her under house arrest. And though she was freed a few times she is now still under house arrest till this day! She couldn't even be with her husband when he passed away in 1999! Imagine that!!! She has been under house arrest for over 17 years! She just recently celebrated her 62nd birthday in isolation. Only her maid and the doctor is permitted to enter her house!

What kind of life is this?

Argh...!!! How frustrating can the world be?

It hurts me soo much when I start learning about these things. These are just one of the issues that I choose to talk about. But there are sooo many issues out there in the world and there are no fast solutions to these problems. Human trafficking, "terrorism" are just one of the many issues that plague the world today. And just sitting in class discussing the so called solutions to these problems gives you the feeling that there is nothing that we can do to save the world.

Such a terrible feeling I tell you. People in Burma are suffering so much for the lack of freedom in their own country. Democracy is just a word for them and even Aung San Suu Kyi mentioned in her writing "In Quest of Democracy" that they are "rice robots". And though the international body is trying to take measures to force the government in Burma to change their systems, nothing much is being done. Many foreign companies like Pepsi, Carlsberg, Heineken Beer, Apple Computer, and Toyota to name a few have discontinued or lessened their operations because of the country's international reputation. Even the World Bank has ended its relationship with the military regime sending a clear message that investment in Burma should be considered extremely risky. Efforts are going on as we speak to discourage tourism to Burma because it inadvertently helps the military junta in its denomination in the country.

Are you doing your part in "helping" the regime?

But if these actions aren't doing anything, what else can we do? International scrutiny can only reach a certain point. What action needs to be taken or what tragedy needs to happen before the government finally changes?

The military regime changed the English word of Burma to Myanmar in 1989. But many countries do not recognize this because its a symbol of accepting the legitimacy of the ruling military regime. What actions are you taking to make yourself more aware on this situation?

It is proper to doubt, to be uncertain... Do not go upon what has been acquired by repeated hearing. Nor upon tradition, nor upon rumors... When you know for yourself that certain things are unwholesome and wrong abandon them... When you know for yourself that certain things are wholesome and good, accept them.

Aung San Suu Kyi, "In Quest of Democracy" (1991)

Hanging out in the Patio

One thing different I realized about the houses in US (mainly California) is that people really pay attention to their outdoor furnitures, especially patio furniture. I think its largely due to the weather in California. I cannot emphasize to you how much the SUN is appreciated here. Its always windy and cold around here. And soooo unpredictable. It can be bright and sunny, but once you go outdoors you'll freeze to death because of the super cold wind. That's why when the weather starts to get warm even a little bit, people start to read outside or head to the beach.

I never knew I'll come to say this but I love suntanning! Wahahah...

Protecting the Car

Maintaining a car can be a really expensive thing, that's why I'm kinda reluctant to really work hard to fight to get a car. What with the super expensive petrol, car insurance and not to mention an occasional maintanence fee, having a car is not a cheap investment. And don't forget about the exchange rate, even though US's exchange rate has drop tremendously but its still expensive compared to the Malaysian Ringgit.

But having a car really brings lots of benefits. Like more freedom to do anything! Argh... money money bunny! Guess I should check the car insurance online.

Kenny Sia attended a prom!

Argh!!!! I just found out that Cody was in the same room as Kenny Sia..

What? You don't know who is Kenny Sia?

The only bestest Malaysian blogger in the world. He does not bitch about people like some other "popular" Singaporean blogger to make people go to her blog more. Though he does make fun of people sometimes but.. seriously.. I hate those people that pin point other people for their flaws. Who do you think you are? >.<

Ok.. I'm getting off topic again as usual.. But argh.. I lurve... Kenny Sia. He makes me miss home so much. He's like my occasional dose of Malaysian drug all the way from US. And sad though it may seem, he's my source of latest information in Malaysia too. I unfortunately don't read the news often. Boohooo.. Though lately he seemed to be blogging a little too much on events and advertorial stuff. But who am I to comment! Hehe.. me who blogs because of paid post. Shh..

Anyway.. back to topic again. Kenny Sia's latest post was on the prom he attended in MMU (Multimedia University). Cody told me a while ago that he was gonna have a prom soon and I didn't give much thought about it even though I was a little jealous imagining him dancing with all the other girls but.. well.. I'm here and he's there.. I just have to trust him.

But I didn't think it was a big thing. Ya know.. its just a prom.. But then he told me that Jien was gonna be there. Ya know.. Jien from Disney and Malaysian Idol. He doesn't look his age at all!!! He looks 25!!! I think he's like late 30's or something. And he recently had a "shot gun marriage". Hehe.. scandals scandals.

Ok.. ANYWAY...Kinda big deal but still not as big deal. Then the prom came and went. And he showed me pictures that he took with Jien and a really familiar Malaysian celebrity whom I later found out was Stephanie Chai.

Ok.. so MMU invited famous people to host their prom. That's great! Not the normal boring event where you just sit around looking at each other and acclaiming how beautiful everyone look. Cody kept telling me that he had something exciting to tell me but he wanted to show me the pictures to get my reaction. And he never got around to telling me.

Until I went to Kenny Sia's blog and read about his MMU post. KENNY SIA WAS IN FREAKING MMU!!!!!!!!

Ok.. I'm making a big deal out of nothing. He's just a blogger. But a super nice blogger who is still humble in his roots! And most importantly he does not BITCH!!! Did I mention again how I hate people that bitch about other people? People that dish about other people's little flaws like how big their pimple is!

Though I kinda wonder how it would be like to actually meet him in person. Dya think he'll scorn at you and walk away? I don't wanna sound like an obsessive fan..

Hmm... dunno!

Kenny Sia was in the same room as Cody!!!! And if I was back home, I would have attended the prom too... Right Cody? Right right?

And the saddest part.. Cody got to take a picture with him.. Bohooo..

Omg..!
Ignore the fact that Cody is all "My Chemical Romance"
=P

Not the best picture to show off but still better than nothing.

And I'm tooo excited to care about anonymity. Whatever... Wahaha...

I wonder if Kenny Sia remembered this picture? He probably took a gazillion pictures that day.

I'm half way across the world..!!! Argh.!!!

I hate my connection!

Ok.. I know the connection in US is supposed to be really good and all but for some weird reason, the connection in my room sucks!!! (for lack of a better term!) I can't watch youtube videos, I can't open PDF files, I can't download anything! And its just my room! Though I hope its not my laptop because when I used it in other places, it downloads fine.

Can anyone tell me what the problem is? My roommate that lives across from me using a different line works fine. WHY??? Is it because of my cables? Hmm.. Do you think its because of my cables? Omg.. before this I never thought of that. I actually use different cables for my room and when I go outside. Hmm.. wonder if CAT6 will make it better?

36 days more to go!

I can do this! Just another few more days to go before I'm back home!!!

Food!

Indian food!

Nasi Lemak!

Curry noodles!

Maggi Mee Goreng!

KFC! (Wahahah..)

Malaysian slang!

Driving on the left side of the road!

Speaking Cantonese, Mandarin, Malay, English all in one day!

Cody! ^.^

I love Malaysia!

I just need to get past all my finals and papers first!

Though I don't really know what defines home now since my family wont be there! >.<

I got a suite!

Argh.. room selection can be such a nerve-wrecking process I tell you! Its scary! The way my university chooses the rooms for the students is through lottery process. We have two kinds of room in our university, which are suites and double room. Suites have two separate room inside and one common bathroom which you share with your roommate. A double room is one big room and two people share a room together with a one bathroom inside of course. Obviously everyone wants a suite because everyone wants their own private rooms but of course its not enough to go around for everybody so we have to go for a lottery process to see who is lucky enough to get a suite. Basically you put your name inside the box and if your name is called out, you get a suite!

Simple as that. All based on luck!

And.. I can tell you that I'm not a lucky gal at all. I mean, luck is not my best friend. I have never won any prizes before and lucky draws are terrible too me. I don't even bother joining them nowadays. What's the point?

But I had to win this lottery no matter what because no way am I gonna stay in a room with a another girl 24/7. I may sound like a spoiled brat but I love my privacy!!!

We only had 24 suites to go around for over 80 over students. I almost gave up when I didn't hear my name the first 5 minutes. My name was the third last to be called. And because I was almost the last, we didn't get to choose the room and the floor that we wanted to live in. But I guess its better than nothing.

I'm excited for the new semester. I get to decorate my room again and have a new roommate! Wahah.. she's from Puerto Rico! Interesting right? I better look through some furniture catalog to get some ideas. WOooo..

I want the read books!!!

I know I know.. I sound like a nerd! But its been ages since I last officially sit myself comfortably on a big sofa with a good book! Like The Appeal by John Grisham. I think Cody likes him. I'm always busy reading stuff about human rights or how salsa was formed in New York and not in Cuba that I have absolutely no time to read leisurely. And even if I were to choose to procrastinate which I often do, I will feel terribly guilty because technically, if I can read books, I can finish my readings too!

I can't wait for the holidays! Though I think I'll end up not reading any books too! Boohoo.. I'm a confuse gal.

Overindulging!

Ever since getting a car, me and my friends have been going crazy with our new found freedom trying out random places around Orange County. We have tried one Indian restaurant, 3 Korean restaurants, 2 Chinese restaurants, and 3 Japanese restaurants. We have yet to try a Malaysian restaurant though according to the GPS that my friend has, it says that we have around 4 to 5 Malaysian restaurants around here with the nearest being 40 miles. I think that's around 60 something kilometers! I can't wait to try one of those! Argh.. I miss Malaysia sooo much!!!

Anyway.. we have been eating outside so much though technically, I don't really know how you define by outside food anymore. But I really feel that the food in US is more healthy that in Malaysia. I havent had any food poisoning in ages (*touch wood) and it seems that food poisoning is not at all common in US. My friend only had one food poisoning her entire life! Imagine that! People in Malaysia get it once a month! What with all the fried stuff, oily stuff, spicy stuff! No wonder! We Malaysians really need to go for colon cleanse more often!

That said though... I MISS MALAYSIA! >.<

Finding ways to de-stress

I really don't know how the statistics in Malaysia are but drugs in the US, especially in the universities are sooo common! I have yet to meet a person that havent been exposed to drugs before. Most of them definitely had attended parties where there are drugs involved and whether they take it or not is a different story. I personally have not seen any kind of drugs before but.. Oh my goodness.. is it that common?

No wonder I have to keep writing about taking a drug treatment! Scary!

Dry Land Practice

I'm a swimmer. I repeat. I'm a swimmer. Not a runner, not a soccer player, not a basketball player, not a gymnast, but a swimmer.

I'm not exactly a swimmer as in I'm terribly good at it, but I'm in the swim team! We swim! Not run on treadmills and carry weights!

Argh.. stupid coach! Just beause its not the swimming season anymore (which is another whole topic altogether), he wants us to do dry land practice.

We are swimmers!!! We can't survive on land! We need water!!!

We don't like to sweat! That's why we choose swimming!

Argh.. Terrible.

I hate running. Just running for 5 minutes on the treadmill made me have muscle cramps for the whole freaking week! I had to use the lift everywhere I went! Though now I know the alternative route everywhere around campus without using any staircase. But it hurt like hell!!!

Maybe it would have been better if I had the Precor Elliptical. But I doubt so.

And the weights! Argh.. I had to do bench press and it was horrible! I couldn't carry it at all! My coach had to carry 90% of the weight for me and he kept teasing me about it the whole day. How he was doing more workout than me! Bad bad bad cruel mean coaches I have!!! This is how weak I am and though you need upper body strength for swimming, bla bla bla.. I don't care!!!

Too much McD will make you not be able to do bench press!

I want to swim!!!

Hehe.. ok.. enough of endless blabering. The only bad thing that I know will come out of this thrice a week dry land practice is having huge manly muscles.

Huge guns!

And I don't like it.

Prison for the Innocent!

I first heard about Guantanamo Bay when I attended the Perdana Peace Conference when I was in Malaysia last year. It was described together with Abu Ghaib, which is almost similar to Guantanamo Bay. Just hearing people speak about how the US military puts innocent people inside in the name of protecting the nation and destroying terrorism made me sick! Protecting the Nation? Yeah right!

How can they catch people and sent them to prison without any trials or allowing them to have a lawyer? Do you know Guantanamo Bay is under a "human rights free zone", which means that this place is not under any international law? Universal Declaration of Human Rights is not applicable anymore.

People are being tortured there. For years without end. Sleep deprivation by putting them into brightly lit room 24 hours a day, putting them into small confined spaces, uncomfortable positions, these are just to name a few. And only 10 out of these 400 prisoners actually have criminal records! The others don't have a clue what they are doing there!

Can you imagine?

Check this website out and learn a little more about Guantanamo Bay.

Technology nowadays

I have a new interest these days. It has been taking so much of my time and making me not study or do the things that I'm supposed to do. It is so bad its terrible!

Guess what is my latest addiction?

Photoshop! =( I know I know its old and all but something sparked my interest and I have been on it for hours without end! Making banners, posters and all. And put on facebook!

Argh.. so many distractions! Help!!!

Argh.. what's a college student to do in times like this?

Throw the laptop outside the window!

Blogging about food!

Wow.. its been ages since I last blog about food! I don't really know why either but I have stop posting pictures about food though I occasionally still whip out my camera whenever I go to some new place.

Ever since one of my good friends got a car, we have been driving everywhere to try out new food. Its so exciting having a car! No need to be stuck on campus every single day. You don't know the feeling of happiness we get knowing that we have the freedom to go ANYWHERE we want ANYTIME we want!

Wahaha.. hopefully my results wont suffer.

And hopefully my dad doesn't read this! =(

Anyway, we recently went to a Korean place near Irvine. There's this street call Culver street and it has all kinds of Asian restaurants there. There's even an Indian Curry House and a Persian supermarket. Ranch 99, which is a Chinese supermarket is around there too. Not to mention a few Korean and Japanese restaurants. But as usual, no Malaysian restaurants.

Cant wait for the May holidays to come! Ahhhh..

We went to this place called Koba Tofu. Heard it from one of the students on campus. The interior of the place was very pretty and the waitresses there actually speak Korean. You know the food should be fair if the people actually speak the language! Unlike some Japanese restaurants that is own by Mexicans.

Nothing wrong but you know..

The food there was okay. I like the soup the best. As usual we were served the small dishes as appetizers. I love the fried fish. Never been to a Korean place that serves fried fish!

I ate all of it! Including the bones!

The soup was really nice. We called super spicy. They had the spicy numbering from 1 to 5 and being a Malaysian, of course I ordered number 5. Wahaha..

Too much Tofu though.. Overwhelming. >.<

My favorite Korean dish is bimbimbap. Not sure if that's the correct name but the one where you mush everything up in a stone bowl! Yup, the important thing here is the stone bowl. Therefore how can you serve bimbimbap in a plastic bowl? That is not called bimbimbap already. =.=

Ah well..

Ok ok only.

The food in this place can be considered good if you like tofu. Especially since their specialty is tofu. But I'm not really a tofu person. Especially those white soft ones. Price is normal, not to cheap, but bearable I guess. Around $15 a person.

Nice to have Asian food though. ^.^

Having a Car

I have been trying to get a car for myself ever since I got here. Aside from going around when I'm bored with the campus, I feel I need a car if I want to do some internships.

Not easy to get a car though. Especially with a stingy dad! >.<

"Dad.. are you reading this?"

Anyway, though cars here are cheap, compared to Malaysian cars, gas (Yup! They don't call it petrol) here is quite pricey. Malaysians shouldn't complain so much about the gas prices because the government is already subsidizing quite an amount. Not to mention car insurance! It is so important over here. If you don't own one, you'll get a ticket if you get caught and over here in the States, there's no such thing as "paying the police for their afternoon snack".

Normal insurance will be about $80 to $100 something a month. Depends what kind of insurance you get. They have two kinds. One is for your car, and the other is for the car that you hit. Though most poor college students only buy insurance for the other car, not their own car.

I want my own car!!! Bluek!

Sleeping well..

Daisaku Ikeda once said that we should work our hardest during our youth, challenging ourselves to everything and when you fall asleep once you hit the pillow in the night, you knew you had a satisfying day.

Ever since coming here, and joining the swim team, the moment I hit the pillow, I fall asleep. I don't really know whether its a good thing or not. I'm always so tired! You can never get enough sleep! Boohoo.. I just skipped my Japanese class this afternoon to sleep. Terrible! I never skip class for no reason. I know I know I'm a nerd but.. Boohoo..

But I guess its a good thing. Knowing that I'm living my life to the fullest here. Wonder if having a memory foam mattress will make any difference?

Window Rock

Note: I was asked to write a reflection of one of the events during my Alternate Spring Break experience. I chose Window Rock and this was what I wrote.

After a hard day’s of work and accumulated lack of sleep, I wasn’t really interested in the field trip to window rock. What could be so interesting about this place? I just want to have dinner and go and sleep! That was the only thought that my poor tired brain could muster that day. But when we first got a glimpse of the magnificent view of the amazing “hole” in the middle of a big huge rock mountain, I knew that I was the luckiest girl ever!

First off, coming from Malaysia, I never thought I would ever be able to witness a scene like this. Malaysia is a tropical country with green mountains everywhere, no where can you see rows and rows of orange, brownish rocks. Nature is such a beautiful creation. How can a big huge mountain have a “hole” in the middle? I’m still reeling in shock at nature’s beauty!

How lucky we are as human beings to be able to enjoy something like that!

Obviously every one of us was busy taking tons and tons of pictures to keep as memories and also to brag to others where we went during our spring break. But halfway through our photo taking pictures, Jay-R suddenly called on to us to move along, that we have other places to go. Where can we go again? My complaining self started to mumble again. I want to take more pictures! The sun is going down! But obviously I did not want to be left behind so I tag along with the group. We walked along a few rows of houses (and a lot of rubbish!) and finally reach an “entrance” where we started to climb the mountain!

Wait a minute!

Look how steep it was further up!

“Are we going to climb this huge rock?” I thought. This is definitely going to be fun! I wonder if we would climb till we can peak through the “hole”. Like playing hide and seek? So, with one hand carrying my camera, I started to make my way through trekking through the mountain. Initially, it wasn’t that big a deal and I started to take my time, taking gazillion pictures along the way. But suddenly, we reached this super steep 45 degrees mountain that we needed to climb to get to the destination that we were supposed to go (wherever that was supposed to be!). I looked up and my knees started to feel soft! Can anyone actually climb that? I started to take huge deep breaths! But seeing everyone reaching the top like little monkeys, I too wanted to follow them. Thankfully, Jullian was lagging behind too and he started to guide me up. He took over my gigantic bulky camera (Thank you so much!), which I was so worried it would drop on the hard rock and break to smithereens! It wasn’t as hard as I thought it would be as we ascended up the steep rock mountain. Now all that I was worried about is how we would go down later.

The view there was magnificent. The sun was slowly going down so the sky had this soft dark orange light surrounding it. We could see the houses below and every where around us was orange brown rock. Not to mention sand, cactuses, and weird looking interesting green plants. We reached the window rock in a few minutes and again, the view was breathtaking. This time, we were on the other side of the “hole” and it was pretty amazing just standing there sucking in the beauty. We took a group photo (as usual!) and started to descend down.

What happened next will always stay in my mind forever. While we were making our way down, it started to snow. First it was light snow, and I started to try and catch it on film. But after that, it started to pour and the view was absolutely amazing.

I can’t even describe the beauty of it.

Pictures just don't justify it.

This trip was the first time that I got to witness snow and though I saw snow the second day we were here, to be standing in the midst of wilderness, having the sound of nature enveloped you, is a whole new feeling altogether. I just wanted to stand there forever and just absorb this moment as much as I can and engrained it in my bank of memories forever! I was the last one in the group as I kept trying to take as many pictures as possible. Therefore, no one was behind me, making me feel like I was the only person in the world. Standing there, taking in the beauty that was happening beside me is the bestest feeling anyone can ever get. I so want climb the Himalayas now (Yeah right!) The snow started to pour and pour and pour and surprisingly, I didn’t feel as cold as I thought it would be. The trip down wasn’t as hard to because Jay-R, the smart and kind guy he is, took another route and we didn’t need to “slide” down the 45 degrees mountain. Did I mention again how great Jay-R is?

Before the start of this trip, someone asked me whether I saw snow before and when I mentioned I didn’t, and asked how it feels like to witness snow, the person had this awed, faraway look on his face, and told me witnessing snow is the most beautiful thing in the world. One that he never gets tired witnessing. I absolutely agree with that.

I am the luckiest girl in the whole world!

Playing Golf!

My dad finally got a video camera for himself. I swear! It is so unfair that my family gets to see me when we talk on the webcam but I never get to see them. They can see how fat I have gotten but I have no idea how they have change!

Imagine! It has been almost a year since I last saw my parents! It was such a weird feeling, seeing my dad for the first time after 8 months! He didn't really aged much, or change much but it kinda made me realize how much I miss my parents. I asked him if he has gotten fatter or his belly has gotten bigger, and he purposely stood sideways to show me his fit belly! My dad is so cute! =) I wonder if he still plays golf? I havent seen much golf courses around here. Though I heard Brandon resorts have really nice golf courses. Wonder if I will ever play golf? Hmm.. I think I still prefer swimming! ^.^

Money for your Life?

Ever since coming to US, I just realized how great the medical insurance here is. I don't know about the medical insurance in Malaysia but over here, everything is paid for when you have a medical insurance! It is compulsory to have a medical insurance in my university. I thought it was a total waste of money because that's the mentality back home. You only get insurance when you "think" you're gonna die. But ever since coming over here and having my own insurance, I have gotten so many benefits from it. A lot of vaccinations are covered by the insurance, even pap smear, or the cervical cancer prevention vaccination. I really have to go find out the other benefits that this insurance gives and make use of it as much as possible! Hehe..

I wonder how the term life insurance here is?
